"Material culture" describes the objects produced by human beings, or the physical objects, resources, and spaces that people use to define their culture. You must take one introductory course (100-level) and at least four upper-level courses (200-level and above).
Departments that commonly-offer courses focusing on material culture include:
- Africana Studies
- Art History
- Anthropology
- Communications and Media Studies
- English
- Game Studies
- Gender and Women's Studies
- Fashion Studies
- History
- Languages, Literature, and Culture Studies
- Material Culture Studies
- Museum Studies
- Music
- Sociology
If you are unsure if a class fulfills the material culture requirement, check with your departmental advisor or the undergraduate director, prior to registering.
Chemistry (16 credits)
Four chemistry courses are required for a major in art conservation as well as admission into most art conservation graduate programs:
CHEM 103/133 General Chemistry/Lab
CHEM 104/134 General Chemistry/Lab
CHEM 321/325 Organic Chemistry I/Lab
CHEM 322/326 Organic Chemistry II/Lab
Adding a chemistry minor or major is an option for students who are especially interested in chemistry and conservation science. The chemistry minor requires two more chemistry courses than we currently require for the major.
