We look forward to welcoming our third-year Fellows in the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation back to Winterthur on August 23, 2022, for a day of formal lectures documenting their internship experiences. During this past year and despite the pandemic, these remarkably talented and resilient students assessed and conserved a range of materials, many bringing untold stories to light. They have:
- Re-assembled a bronze wine set from the 13th-c. B.C.E.
- Conserved and reunited the fragments of ancient archaeological textiles and researched the effects of light on dye fading.
- Analyzed and conserved a 6-foot panel painting by the prominent mid-century Nigerian artist, Uche Okeke.
- Engaged with a growing network of Jewish museums, synagogues, and private collections, connecting traditional collection care practices with contemporary preservation techniques.
- Performed leather and wooden board repair on an insect-damaged 15th-c. gothic binding with ornate braided endbands to enable the volume to be safely handled by library patrons.
- Cleaned an 1866 landscape painting by George Inness after identifying varnish and overpaint layers with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy.
- Conserved a 17th-c. Chinese lacquer screen panel by stabilizing the paint and lacquer elements during which close examination revealed unanticipated alterations and anomalies within the carved inscription, prompting an ongoing investigation of the altered characters.
- Analyzed 18th- and 19th-c. volumes with red text block edge decoration to determine the historical presence of vermilion.
- Cleaned and created internal supports for a pair of Stephen Sprouse Moon Boots with neon-orange paper tape in a collaborative treatment.
- Completed a comprehensive treatment on a Soundsuit by Nick Cave.
Their lectures will be livestreamed via a Zoom Webinar for all who wish to attend. A schedule of the talks is available on our web site. To receive information about attending the Class of 2022 virtual presentations, please contact Theresa Slusser at tslusser@udel.edu. All are welcome!
