​Dr. Anthony Lagalante has been an Affiliated Associate Professor in the University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation since 2010. He holds a B.S. Chemistry degree from Virginia Tech and a Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He is a Professor of Chemistry at Villanova University (Villanova, PA) where he instructs an undergraduate science course on the Chemistry of Art, an undergraduate Art History course in Renaissance Art and Science, and courses in Chemical Instrumentation. He has led workshops on the scientific examination of Cultural Heritage through the NSF Center for Workshops in the Chemical Sciences. Through a sharing of laboratory instrumentation and expertise, Dr. Lagalante has fostered research collaborations between WUDPAC faculty members and WUDPAC/Villanova graduate students including the restoration and scientific analysis of a large oil on canvas painting by Pietro da Cortona ( Collaborative NSF-funded research with Richard Wolbers has examined the mechanism of soiling in modern acrylic paintings and resulted in the successful engineering of a water-in-silicone-based emulsion to clean these water-sensitive fine art surfaces.  Current collaborative efforts between Professors Lagalante and Wolbers include the use of desorption electrospray mass spectrometry (DESI-MS) to study fine art surfaces and the use of atmospheric plasmas to create siloxane barrier coatings for museum plastics.
