Paint Mediums
Oil Paint
Hello,
I grind my own paints using the CPVC and a medium thats 50% linseed oil and a 50% polymerized linseed oil that doesnt have a low ph.
My issue is that I glaze and i want to properly dilute my paint. Some people tell me to dilute simply with oil, others with a 50% stand and 50% spike oil mixture and im sure there are many other ways.
Is there a proper way that one can dilute the oil for glazing? Is there a math formula, like the CPVC formula ,in order to find out how much solvent can be used before it becomes unhealthy for the paint? I ask this bc if there is i can use spike oil on it own in a safe way.
Thanks,
Hector

First, I am no fan of spike oil. Its claims of lack of
toxicity result mainly from the fact that it has never been rigorously tested. It
is also very slow evaporating and is relatively polar and aromatic. It can
dissolve or at lest compromise lower oil layers. It is probably totally fine
for ala prima painting, especially on oil grounds, but that is not what you are
asking about. Others may disagree with my assessment but as I wrote, it has
really never been tested.
Your 50/50 sounds pretty fat to me, but, of course, that
depends on how much you are adding. Small additions are probably fine. There
are no established mathematical formulae, because in oil painting, each pigment
is so different in terms of required oil. However, using proper PVC means that
you are really able to simply slightly thin the paint and it should be fine. A
little more oil will help to create the rich glaze you are looking for without
going overboard.
I suggest erring on less oil and not more.
