WUDPAC students, faculty and Winterthur conservation staff were at the Smithsonian American Art Museum to attend the 7th Safety and Cultural Heritage Summit on October 27, 2023, to learn from colleagues working at the interface of industrial hygiene and collections care. The summit was co-organized by the Potomac Local Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, the Washington Conservation Guild, the Smithsonian Institution’s Office of Safety, Health and Environmental Management and the Smithsonian National Collections Program.
Dr Melissa Tedone (Assistant Professor) and Dr Rosie Grayburn (Affiliated Associate Professor) also presented a poster on the Poison Book Project and the Bibliotoxicology Working Group which they founded in 2022. The poster provided attendees with the tangible benefits to their organization by joining the Working Group. It perfectly complimented another poster and an in-person arsenic book assessment presentation from The Walters Art Museum.
Congratulations to everyone on an enriching summit with opportunities for students and staff to hear about current best practices in safety practices around collections and to connect with conservation colleagues working in the DC area.
