Biography
Joanna Hurd is an Associate Paper Conservator at the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) in Philadelphia. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Art History and a minor in Visual Arts from Boston University in 2012 and her Master of Science degree with a major in Paper Conservation and a minor in Photograph Conservation from the Winterthur Museum/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation (WUDPAC) in 2020. Between degrees Joanna explored the different fields of conservation working as an intern for textile, objects, furniture, paintings, and paper private practices, and as a technician in the Philadelphia Museum of Art's paper conservation lab. She is passionate about using her background with a variety of materials in advocating for STEAM education and loves to share the connection between art and science with students of all ages.
Joanna's ongoing research explores the relationship between pH and conductivity with paper bathing, as well as general conservation practices regarding pH and conductivity measurements. She also conducted a year-long technical study of an 18th-century Pennsylvania German devotional manuscript at the Winterthur Museum as a Post-Graduate Fellow and a brief investigation into the structure of a 15th-century pasteprint at the Weissman Preservation Center.
