“When Susan Holt (Mosely Gallery Director, UMES) called me in May 2018, after a major storm in Eastern Maryland, I was delighted to suggest that she bring the large water-damaged painting to the paintings conservation studio at Winterthur. We were then preparing to host our second TIPC (Two-week Introduction to Practical Conservation) course for five HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) students, hoping to interest them in the profession of art conservation. They were pleased to immediately participate in applying a consolidant to the raised and curled paint chips on a painting owned by a sister HBCU. Dr. Jontyle Robinson of Tuskegee, one of the leaders of the TIP-C initiative, had actually known the artist, Jimmie Mosely, so all the pieces fit into place. The treatment continued the following fall with University of Delaware undergraduates who were taking an internship in practical painting conservation at Winterthur; by the end of the semester, Roger Blakemore joined the team as a pre-program student. Roger finished the painting (with a break due to the pandemic) by March 2021."
