Industrial and Non-Traditional Products Sizes and Adhesives

I have found a stone veneer product that I would like to paint in oils on.  It is very thin and has a backing that consists of an adhesive  ( that has a PH of 3.5- 4) and cotton.  The company has said to me that the PH needs to be this in order for the product to be waterproof. .  So my question (s) is this:  Is this a bad idea and if so, can it be fixed?  ( Example, could I use buffermount to adhere the backing to an archival board say?  Could I paint some type of ground on the stone's surface to  seal it/ give it more protection?   I really want to work on this because it is super lightweight, pliable and I have lots of ideas.  www.slate-like.com

I would think that as long as the adhesive is no where near where you will be painting and if you adhere it to a surface that will not be harmed by the low PH, you should be all right. I do wonder about the cotton fabric adhered to the back. That is a very acidic adhesive and it would seem very likely that there would be cellulose degradation over time. This may not affect the painting on the surface but perhaps it could jeopardize the adhesion to whatever you glue the stone veneer to.

Some stone veneers use a cotton/fiberglass felt, bonded with polyester resins, so I would want to verify thse details. Also, when I researched this material previously, there were detectable cracks in the stone which I would think could be significant in deciding how to prepare it.
