Environmental management: guidelines for museums and galleries1995London and New York: Routledge. This book discusses the theory and practice for achieving an appropriate museum environment for both collection and people. Rather than ready solutions and rigid rules, it provides principles and ideas on which to base decisions to create an appropriate environment. It discusses environmental issues related to the building, display and storage. (provided by Bruno P. Pouliot)Cassar, M. 1995. Environmental management: guidelines for museums and galleries. Museum Microclimates2007National Museum DenmarkThis publication includes the most recent proceedings of the latest conference on environmental climates recommended for museums. The text is fully available online through the National Museum of Denmark website (http://www.natmus.dk/sw53828.asp) and I highly recommend that you consult it to see the breadth of expertise and recommendations that is available on the topic. Of particular interest is a PowerPoint commentary by Marion Mecklenburg that summarizes the results of the conference and his thinking in this area. (provided by Bruno P. Pouliot)Padfield, T. and K. The Museum Environment1986London: Butterworth PublishersAlthough this book is about 20 years old, it remains a standard textbook on the topic of museum environment; Thomson was a pioneer in setting up parameters that remain in effect (many with slight modification) until today. Few books, if any, compare to this publication in its breadth and it remains still today a great reference. (provided by Bruno P. Pouliot)Thompson, G. 1986. The Museum Environment. 2nd ed. Museum Climate in a Changing WorldunknownAmerican Institute for ConservationThis provides an excellent historical background, and an overview of the issues at the forefront of the discussions since 2008 related to a relaxation of the current environmental parameters in museums, with the ultimate goal to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint in museums. While the historical background is a bit lengthy, it also helps provide a solid overview of past and current thinking, with a great list of references, most of which are also available online. Environmental monitoring and revised environmental standards at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation2003Milton Keyes, UK: Environmental Building Solutions, Ltd.This is an excellent overview discussing the RH/T parameters adopted for the over 350 buildings at Colonial Williamsburg, taking into account the particular weather of their location, the building fabrics, and the many years of observation on the impact of environmental factors on the preservation of historical collections. The new parameters allow the RH/T to float yearround, rather than having different set points between the warm and cold seasons. (provided by Bruno P. Pouliot)Anderson, C. E., and C. Kestner. 2003. Comparing temperature and relative humidity data-loggers for museum monitoring2011Washington, D.C.: National Park ServiceThis source, published by the National Parks Service, is a summary of what the data logger is, its purpose and uses, variations in types of data loggers, as well as the many variables that need to be considered when purchasing one. The source overviews several different types of loggers that are appropriate for monitoring environmental conditions in cultural institutions as well as the perceived positives and negatives of each one. This is a useful source for those either unfamiliar with data loggers or who are looking to purchase one and are looking for information on how to choose the best logger for their institution. Chapter 5: Understanding the Role of Dew Point, from IPI's Guide to Sustainable Preservation Practices: Managing Storage Environments2012Rochester: New York: Image Permanence Institute.Chapter 5, "Understanding the Role of Dew Point" was the section of this source that was used. The chapter identifies what dew point is, introduces the Dew Point Calculator by the Image Permanence Institute and a means for controlling the environment using the principles of dew point, temperature, and relative humidity. This source is welllaid out and organized, includes quick facts, and is a good source for introducing the basics on dew point, temperature, and relative humidity. Temperature and relative humidity effects on the mechanical and chemical stability of collections.1999ASHRAE Journal 41(4): 6974.This article focuses on how temperature and relative humidity affect objects with the largest stress on the mechanical change caused by incorrect relative humidity and chemical considerations. It also covers how objects take time to acclimate to the surrounding relative humidity and in lesser detail the effect of temperature and age on the object with respect to the object's response to temperature and relative humidity. It discusses various materials and their response to temperature and relative humidity and as an overall consideration indicates that larger ranges in both temperature and relative humidity can be acceptable for museum objects. This is a helpful source as it provides a more manageable range than the traditional 70?F/50% guideline that has been held to for so long. (written by Claire Curran)Mecklenburg, M. F., and C. S. Incorrect Relative Humidity.2013CCI NotesThis source, published by the Canadian Conservation Institute, is helpful for defining relative humidity and how it can be damaging to objects as well as its connection to temperature and dew point. It provides several pictures, tables, and charts that are helpful in illustrating each of the sections. It is intended to be a source for any level reader and is successful in this goal. This was a helpful source for knowing how to clearly describe relative humidity and its effect on objects for the recommendations section of the author's preventive research report. A Practical Guide for Sustainable Climate Control and Lighting in Museums and Galleries.2014Sydney: International Conservation Services and Steensen Varming. While written specifically for Australian museums, this online publication offers an excellent guide on environmental management in museum and similar institutions. What is particularly interesting is that it clearly represents the new approaches and current thinking in terms of managing museum environments, while taking into consideration factors related to sustainability, costs, and invasiveness of control equipment, particularly as it relates to its impact on historical buildings or newly designed structures. Aspects covered include RH/temperature, light, and pollutants. It also offers well explained chapters on sustainable design strategies and matrices suggesting practical implementation strategies to achieve the desired results. In sum, this is not only an excellent summary of the current knowledge on the impact of environmental factors on museum collection, but also a well written practical guide for implementation of the appropriate environment while considering sustainability.
