Oil Paint
Art Conservation Topics
Jerry's artarama makes an aluminum metal surface on which they claim you can paint directly onto. My question is can really I use oil paint directly on this surface (without any gesso) and will it last or will it chip off over time?

Sorry your question seems to have fallen through the cracks.
I am not aware of the product so I cannot make definitive statements.
Additionally, we do not currently have a representative from Jerry’s to
comment. I will try to remedy this soon, and hopefully, their representative
can comment on this. I would say that I worry about oxidation to the aluminum
surface interfering with adhesion over time without an intermediate layer or a
ground applied immediately after abrasion and cleaning with an appropriate
solvent.
It is certainly possible that Jerry’s has found a way around
this and the panels are as advertised. I will let them respond to your question
before making any definitive statements on the subject.
