Biography
Laura Mina joined Winterthur as the Associate Conservator of Textiles and Head of Textile Lab in 2017 and she is now Conservator of Textiles at National Museum of African American History and Culture.
Laura received an M.A. in Fashion and Textile Studies: History, Theory, Museum Practice from the Fashion Institute of Technology with a specialization in conversation, and a B.S. in Performance Studies from Northwestern University. Her graduate thesis included the treatment of a French 18th century man’s suit, with research on the evolution of the garment’s cultural context and preservation.
Before joining Winterthur, Laura spent three years as Associate Conservator with The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her previous experiences includes a Mellon Foundation fellowship in Costume and Textile Conservation with The Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as contracts with The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, and Museum Conservation Institute.
Laura is a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (AIC). She has been a member of the Health & Safety Committee since 2015. She served as the Program Chair (2016-2017) and Chair (2017-2018) of the Textiles Specialty Group. Laura’s research interests include conservation ethics, the cultural contexts of textiles, and the use of surfactants, chelators, and pH in aqueous cleaning. She has published on the subjects of conservation ethics, aqueous cleaning techniques, modern knit fabrics, and integrated pest management.
