Barbara Lemmen

Barbara Lemmen received her BA from Williams College in 1985 (with majors in Art History and Chemistry) and her MS in Conservation (with a major in photographs, and minors in paper and objects) from the University of Delaware in 1991. Ms. Lemmen’s training included internships in photograph conservation treatment and research at the National Archives of Canada, the Image Permanence Institute, and the Jose Orraca Studio. From 1993 to 2001, she operated a private practice in New Hampshire before joining the staff of the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts in Philadelphia, where she is now a senior conservator. Ms. Lemmen has led numerous workshops in the treatment and preservation of photographs for a diverse range of audiences. Since 2002, she has been supervising second-year WUDPAC students in the treatment of photographs. Some areas of special interest to her are non-traditional conservation adhesives, the rebinding of daguerreotypes, and fixing friable photographic images. She is co-author of a book chapter on coatings on Polaroid prints. Barbara has been an active member of the Photographic Materials Group of the American Institute for Conservation and is currently serving as Chair of the Professional Education and Training Committee.
