Library Conservation Internship at Ryerson & Burnham Libraries

Duties/Responsibilities:
Working under the supervision of the Library Conservation staff, interns perform a wide variety of specialized treatments on library collections. Initial duties include making protective enclosures for books and ephemeral material. Beginning treatments will also include humidifying, encapsulating, cleaning, mending, and backing of two-dimensional items: architectural drawings, maps, posters, and blueprints. Interns will proceed to a higher level of treatment only when hand skills are evident and their progress is satisfactory. The second tier of treatment includes conservation of books: resewing, recasing, and rebacking as well as the consolidation and repair of deteriorating leather bindings.
Required Qualifications/Skills:
Superior manual skills essential. Ability to perform delicate, exacting tasks with a high level of productivity. Ability to coordinate work with others. Must have experience in bookbinding at a beginner’s level and be familiar with terminology and techniques associated with the craft of bookbinding.
Preferred Qualifications/Skills:
Preferred candidates will be currently enrolled in a recognized bookbinding program or related field.
Length of Program:
One semester (fifteen weeks) with possible renewal for a second semester based on performance
Compensation: unpaid
College Credit: Available
Hours: 1 day per week, 9:00-4:00, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday preferred
